Today, Candy and I hit the road again to take a road trip to Machias, Maine, about an hour up the coast toward Canada. Candy actually has been here before when she interviewed for a position at University of Maine at Machias in 2006.
As would make a lot of sense for this historic part of our great country, we found out today that the first naval battle of the American Revolution was the Battle of Machias. The first British vessel captured by the Americans, the Margaretta, was captured in this battle.
Candy got some great shots on this trip from Machiasport, Bucks Harbor, Columbia Falls, and Gouldsboro Harbor today. We think that these pictures tell a great story.
Machias has a park called Bad Little Falls Park. The actual name Machias means “a bad run of water,” or “bad little falls,” an appropriate name for the river which runs through the town. The park had a great bridge that crossed the powerful falls.
We saw a ton of blueberry fields and some cranberry bogs on our trip and the Machias area is very well known for these.
The highlight of the day came when we were heading back and stopped to look for bluffs to take pictures from in Gouldsboro Harbor. The panorama at dusk comes from this stop…isn’t it spectacular? Candy is very talented with her camera!
We hope to keep posting as often as we can. Please enjoy these great shots and keep coming back for more!
Edited 5.27.11: We have just posted on our Facebook page a video made in Machias from this trip…hop over and enjoy!
